Fall Trends for 2011

So I have been doing my research on what will be the hottest trends in Jewelry this fall, and I have found a lot of conflicting reports. However, I have found the trends that every report agrees on and what I found to be the most popular on the runways. (mind you... runways are always over the top but you can take the basic idea and apply it to everyday life of us "normal" or "average" people!)
So here are the Top Trends I found:

STATEMENT CHAINS - Basically big chunky, bold chains. Heavy chains with pendants, adorned links and heavy metals (silver, gold, rose, or oxidized metals) Long or short but it still says "Look at me I'm a Chain and proud of it." Just make sure to think bold!

DUSTER EARRINGS - What do I mean by Duster? I mean they come just a hair above the shoulder, so that they still move freely but long enough to just skim the top of the shoulder. I do not recommend these for everyone. Remember, if you have a long thin face, earrings like these can make your face look even longer. Also these earrings are so long I wouldn't wear a necklace. For one, they may tangle and two, they will compete with each other instead of standing out. Opt for the duster earrings and a statement bracelet!

LAYERS, LAYERS AND MORE LAYERS -  The fad of layered necklaces is another of the popular fall jewelry trend. However, this trend is not just for necklaces anymore! Try going bold by wearing a large cuff and a few other chain or beaded bracelets with it. The bolder the better!

MIX MEDIA - We already know that layers are IN, but if you are ready to take that next step in your layers then mix it up! Mix your chains with strands of pearls or gemstone necklaces. Or mix your metals. Silver with gold, copper or gun metal! With mix media you really can't go wrong as long you can have fun with it!

MOTIF - Are you into animals? Or maybe flowers are your thing? Well this season why not add them to your wardrobe? Before I get into trouble with PETA, I don't mean real animals! This season we will see jewelry done in animal motifs, Birds, Snakes, Dragons even Elephants and Butterflies. What better way to "do you" then with the animals or flowers you love! Just do a piece here or there just to personalize your look!

X-LARGE CUFFS - Looks like the cuff, is sticking around for another season, and it looks like they are getting larger! Remember even if you are wearing a large cuff feel free to add to it!!!

LARGE PENDANT NECKLACES - Are you seeing a pattern yet? I am! BOLD BOLD BOLD! Mix them with chains, mix them with beads, just add one and you'll be set!

RETRO or VINTAGE WITH MODERN ELEMENTS - OK, remember as kids we would raid our grandmother's jewelry boxes? You would always find that one piece of jewelry you loved, but it was too old fashioned to wear. Well take it out now and add it to a modern element and you'll be right in style! How about that large antique pin hanging from a chain or even better a leather cord. Use your imagination!

I hope this helps you when putting together that new fall wardrobe, or the edge you need in an old one!

March and Aquamarine

Aquamarine

The name Aquamarine comes from Latin origin meaning "sea water," in reference to its color.  It is the birthstone of March.  It is stone of sailors, they believed it would be protection for them on water.

Folklore says the aquamarine will protect against gossip. It is also said the aquamarine will pick up spirits. This stone promotes playfulness, a sense of humor, and good spirits.  It has also been linked to the making of new friends as well as affection and love, hope and health.

It is an excellent stone to use for meditating, as it brings a great peace and serenity. Some people can meditate on an Aquamarine to receive the wisdom to see truth, but this is a very advanced meditation. This stone is also highly regarded in the East as a seer stone.

Aquamarine is associated with the Zodiac signs of Taurus, Pisces, Gemini, and Aries.  Aquamarine is also known to have healing powers for the throat and mouth area.  It is also associated with the thymus gland. Healers have also used it to help reduce fluid retention and to calm the nerves.

February's Birthstone: Amethyst

Is your birthstone amethyst? Do you know the history behind this stone or what it can do for you when you wear it?

History of Amethyst
The legend of the origin of amethyst comes from the Greeks. Dionysus, the god of intoxication, was angered one day by an insult from a mortal and swore revenge on the next mortal he encountered. After, creating tigers to carry out his wish, unsuspecting Amethyst, a beautiful
young maiden on her way to pay tribute to the goddess Diana appeared. But Diana turned Amethyst into a stature of pure crystalline quartz to protect her from Dionysus' tigers. At the sight of the beautiful statue, Dionysus is said to have wept tears of wine, staining the quartz purple and creating the gem amethyst.

Mystical Powers
The name "amethyst" comes from the Greek meaning "not drunken," and Amethyst has long been considered to be a strong antidote against drunkenness. As the myth goes, drinking wine from an Amethyst goblet would prevent one from becoming inebriated. Wine goblets were often carved from it, and the gemstone still symbolizes sobriety to this day.

Amethyst is a stone traditionally worn to "guard against". It strengthens immunity, while energizing and purifying the blood. Ametyst relieves headaches, and improves blood sugar imbalance. It is beleived to protect one from poison. It is also used as a dream stone and to help insomnia.

Amethyst guards against guilty and fearful feelings. It has been worn as protection from self-deception. It is also used as a meditation aid. The amethyst symbolizes piety, humility, sincerity and spiritual wisdom.  Amethyst crystal clusters are used to keep the air and life force in the home clean and positive.

It's All About the Cuff!

Statement jewelry is what's hot right now. A bold pair of earrings or a large oversized necklace is one way to go, but how often can we wear those in an everyday setting? Be honest! So to stay fashion forward why not go with one of the hottest trends out there right now?

Cuff Bracelets!

They are no longer just for Wonder Woman anymore! Cuff bracelets are being seen everywhere this season. They can be seen being worn with jeans and a top, to celebrities on the red carpet. And why not? They are bold, easy, elegant and know how to make any outfit pop just the right way.

A cuff bracelet can take you anywhere this season. If you are looking for a casual everyday cuff, why not try a cuff made with leather, wood, chains, or semi-precious gemstones. They are casual and durable, yet they add that bold touch that you need with your jeans.

Are you looking for a more sophisticated cuff for the office? Something dressy casual, that will work from a day of meetings to an after work drink with co-workers or friends? Why not go with gold or silver, maybe with a touch of a gemstone inlay.

Then comes those dressy occasions, an elegant dinner party, cocktail party or wedding. How about a beautiful cuff made of crystals and pearls, or you can go highend with diamonds and other precious stones.

Whether you are looking for elegance, chic, or a bit of an edge, a cuff is the way to go! Whether you are wearing them over your bare skin or over a shirt sleeve, they are impossible to miss. By adding this fashion forward bracelet in to your wardrobe you will tell everyone that you are up on your fashion sense!

Jewelry for an Oblong/Rectangular face shape

This face shape often struggles with camouflaging the vertical lines of their features. That's why it's important to choose jewelry that shorten your neck and face.

Earrings
Statement jewelry is a great option especially if short. Button and round earrings contrast the eye-popping edges of your features. Look for different colors and oval shapes to make your look fab. Whether diamond or wood, dangling or hoop all these will do a great favor to your features.

Necklaces
I'll might repeat myself but chokers, and again chokers. As a basic type of necklace it has several benefits when balancing straight vertical lines and minimizing the length of your face.

Jewelry for a Heart shaped face

In order to soften the wider forehead you are advised to wear jewelry that smooth those straight lines. These blings will amazingly balance out the width of your whole face.

Earrings
Earrings with a round or oval shape are perfect, opt for teardrop or Chandelier ones.
Be confident to put on some hoops and dangles. However if you choose angular style, take care of the length. The longer the better, pass on ultra-short earrings.

Necklaces
Chokers are no.1. these soften your jawline and make your features refined. Necklaces with double and even triple strands will also look amazingly.

Jewelry for a Square face shape

When having a square face you may need help in faking the curves and add roundness of your face. Circular style are for you, wear them with confidence! To best help soften the more defined areas of your face, you can avoid wearing angular pieces.

Earrings
You can achieve a softer look with earrings by wearing hoops and teardrop dangles. These earrings will not only look classy but will also brighten up your look in a moment.

Necklaces
Necklaces that best fit a square shaped face are those that are a bit longer in a T-style or decorated with a dangling pendant. Waterfall designs are also a wonderful option for evening out.

Jewelry for an Oval Face

If you have an oval face, you're lucky. Almost any style and length looks gorgeous with your features.

Earrings
When choosing earrings aim for triangular and in general angular ones. These will give definition to your facial lines. If you are looking to elongate your face, then long earrings are what you want. However, to best accentuate your oval face, try instead medium-length dangling ones. Stars and pointed ones work amazingly well.

Necklaces
When you are lucky enough to be blessed with an oval face, low dangling necklaces as well as a chokers were designed for your features. If you have a longer neck you might want to swap extra-long necklaces with short classy ones. This will help emphasize the length of your neck and will accent a top or dress with a deep cut perfectly.

How to Clean Gold Jewelry

So you are looking for a inexpensive cleaner for your gold jewelry? How about an eco-friendly way? Here is a way you can do both!

FOR GOLD JEWELRY WITHOUT GEMSTONES
  1. Put a few drops of liquid dish detergent in a bowl of warm water. Mix gently. For even better results, you can use sodium-free seltzer water or club soda...the carbonation loosens soil and removes debris
  2. Soak the gold jewelry in the solution for 15 minutes.
  3. Scrub each piece of jewelry with a soft-bristle toothbrush. Stiff bristles can scratch the surface of your jewelry. Special brushes designed for this purpose are best, but an eyebrow brush will also work
  4. Rinse each piece in warm running water.
  5. Blot dry with a soft cloth.
FOR GOLD JEWELRY WITH GEMSTONES
  1. Wipe the jewelry with a cloth that's been dabbed in dish soap solution, as instructed above.
  2. "Rinse" the jewelry with a cloth dampened with plain water.
  3. Lay the pieces upside down after cleaning so any remaining moisture won't soak into the setting.
TOOTHPASTE METHOD
Use an old toothbrush and tooth paste to gently scrub off grime. The toothpaste can be applied to a cloth to hand polish an item as well. This method will dull a perfect mirror finish, but so will wearing it. Use this method for gold items that you often wear. Rinse in clean water

Mystic Properties of Garnet (January's Birthstone)

Garnet is the birthstone of January, so I think it is only right for people to know what mystic properties their birthstone has!

The Garnet is a stone of purity and truth as well as a symbol of love and compassion.

The Garnet is known as the stone for a successful business. It is a stone of stability. It is believed that if a garnet is put under a pillow it will cure depression. Garnets can be used to make a person popular and have self-esteem when worn as jewelry. It is said to bring positive thoughts and bringing abundance. It also helps protect one on trips. Garnets bring constancy to friendships. The Garnet will help everyone's security level and spiritual awareness. It can also help increase the sex drive.

Garnet is sometimes called a "stone of health" and lore says that garnet can heal the blood, heart, lungs, spine, bone, cell structure, adrenal glands, acid reflux (GERD), hemhorrage, DNA/RNA, allergies, anemia, skin, reproductive system, physical strength, help assimilate vitamins and minerals, as well as more rapid general healing particularly in areas where regeneration is needed.

Garnet is associated primarily with the root chakra, but also with the heart chakra. It is used to remove negative energy from all the chakras. Various types of garnets have their own properties in addition to those of garnet in general and may be related other chakras as well.

2011 Spring Bridal Jewelry

Brides are you getting married in the spring of 2011, and wondering about bridal jewelry for both you and your bridesmaids? For those brides looking to keep current and stay fashionable, here are some of the trends for spring brides this year:

Lariat necklaces-
One trend getting more popular by the day is the lariat necklace. This is a delicate, graceful, looping necklace has a vintage feel to it. Some lariats are shorter in the front, but have their focus down the back, this is good choice for gowns with open backs. Lariats are a sophisticated choice for any age, and they look especially great with cocktail-length gowns or with the popular sheath style.

Dramatic earrings-
Many brides are choosing to make a statement with their earrings, and forgo a necklace. This is a good choice if you have a dress with a lot of work at the top or a higher neckline. Many Brides are choosing large, loud, brightly-colored gems or delicate dangles that go all the way down to their shoulders. Brides in the spring will prefer to wear earrings that really stand out.

Silver-
Silver has definitely become the preference over gold in recent years. Silver is a better choice for a springtime, so expect to see brides and bridesmaids wearing more of the softer silver look than of the brighter, harsher gold.

Colorful gems-
More and more brides are going to be selecting colorful gemstones for their bridal jewelry, not just for their bridal parties, rather than sticking with the traditional pearls. Amethyst will be one of the most popular choices, with canary, sapphire and emerald close behind, taking advantage of the natural beauty of springtime flowers.

Bracelets-
Bracelets are one of those finicky accessories that fade in and out of fashion but this year they are definitely in. Bridal bracelets are all about multiple strands. Designs with twisted strands of crystals and pearls are popular accented by touches of rich jewel-tones. Many brides will be pairing these statement bracelets with bold earring styles as an alternative to necklaces.

Caring For and Cleaning Pearls

Care Of Pearls

To keep pearls looking their very best you need just a little knowledge on how to care for them correctly.

The products that harm pearls most are the very things that the woman who loves pearls probably wears without a second thought.  You’ve guessed it already – the most harmful product to a pearl is the application of perfume, hair spray and cosmetics and face creams when the owner is wearing the pearls.
These grooming products and other household chemicals if sprayed near pearls can build up on the pearl and damage the lustre.  If sprayed near pearls, they can build up on the pearl and damage the lustre. The nacre can become marked, dull, pitted and generally lose that marvellous luminous lustre that defines a pearl.

Rules of Pearl Care

The most important way to prevent damage to your pearls is by following the golden rule of putting your pearls on as the last thing you do when finishing your grooming.  Put the pearls on after you have applied make up, perfume and hair sprays, never before.  Don’t spray your perfume on the neck area where the pearls will actually sit and avoid touching your pearls when you have just applied hand cream. If you need to reapply hair spray at some time, slip the pearls off for a moment and put them well out of the damage zone.
Likewise make pearls the first thing you remove after a night out, before you wipe your face and neck with cleansers or facial wipes, or night creams.  As you remove your pearls wipe them with a soft damp cloth.  Buff them occasionally with a silk cloth to enhance their shine and lustre.  Try not to fling them in a jumble on the dressing table, but discipline yourself to put them back in their original container.

Cleaning

Jewelers can clean pearls or you can buy a special pearl jewelery cleaning solution.

Don’t clean pearls using any of the jewelery cleaners especially for gold or silver on the market. Such products usually contain an ammonia base.  Also don’t use the ultrasonic cleaning sets as the vibrations can make the pearls rub against each other and cause scuffing.

After wearing your pearls, it’s a good idea to wipe them with a soft cloth; again, to minimize their contact with harmful elements. The oils in your skin are actually fine for the pearls – it maintains their luster and keeps them from drying out. However, the acids in your skin can be very harmful. A quick wipe is all you need after wearing.

If the pearls are old and the lustre is dulling wipe them with a soft damp cloth that has been dipped in a very gentle natural soap solution, next wipe them with a detergent free damp cloth and then allow them to dry flat on kitchen paper.  After the pearls have dried, a cloth with a fine smear of olive oil will help restore some lustre.

Pearls are much softer than stones and gems and can easily be scratched. Consider storing your pearls separately in a soft bag or pouch.

Store your pearls away from radiators, sunlight or other areas which become very hot.
Consider restringing your pearls regularly. Water, which is fine for pearls, will begin to disintegrate the silk on which most pearls are strung. And cosmetics, powders, pollution and grime will eventually attach to the silk, attaching both the silk and the pearls.

How to Clean Gemstones

I have been asked many times how to clean gemstone jewelry. Do you have jewelry at home that is dirty?
Did you know that some cleaning methods can damage some stones?  Well they can!
Below are a list of some gemstones and the best way to clean them. I hope this helps!

How To Clean Silver Jewelry

Things You’ll Need:
disposable aluminum pan or pan lined with aluminum foil
baking soda
boiling water
clean, cotton cloth

Instructions:
Step 1:
For a homemade silver jewelry wash place your silver in a a disposable aluminum pan or pan lined with foil.
Step 2:
Cover with baking soda (1tsp for every cup of water) and very carefully pour boiling water over your jewelry and mix with a spoon. Be careful while doing this step as there is a chemical reaction so avoid breathing in the steam.

Step 3:
Keep stirring and the tarnish will start to come off your silver jewelry. Rinse well with water and dry with a clean, cotton cloth.

Step 4:
If your silver jewelry is intricate or badly tarnished you may have to do this more than once.

Other Methods:
If you prefer to use a commercial method you can purchase a silver polishing cloth to bring shine to silver that isn’t badly tarnished. If your silver is badly tarnished you could use a commercial jewelry cleaner meant for sterling silver.

Jewelry for the Round Face!

This post is for everyone who has the same problem as I do, having a round face! I was born with a round face, grew up with a round face, and today still have the round face. There is nothing I can do about it, so I have learned to love my round face by finding ways to give it the appearance of length. So I have decided to pass these tips along to you.
  1. Appropriate Necklaces Styles for the Round Face Include:- Long t-style necklaces (which compliment a round face nicely and create the illusion of length).
    - 28″ to 34″ (Opera Length) necklaces are also flattering choices.
    - Styles that are in the shape of a “V” create a longer, leaner line.
** A long T-style necklace with a low cut dress, will always make your face look leaner ladies!**
Round Faces Should Avoid:- Chokers, collars or short necklaces of any style.
    - Large pearls, stones and bulky pieces that tend to add visual weight to the neck.  Wearing this jewelry will also widen your neck making your face look rounder
  2. Appropriate Earring Styles for the Round Face:
    - Geometric shapes including squares, triangles, rectangles, diamonds and long ovals (also simple round medium sized studs).
    - Long earrings and drop earrings draw attention to the face and are the most flattering styles (creates the illusion of length).
    - A combination of curved and straight angles.
Round Faces Should Avoid:- Any round or circular shape (unless they’re long), medium size studs, soft teardrop styles, or combination of curved and straight angles.
    - Any large round buttons, or very small studs.
    - Large and bulky styles that create the illusion of width.
Remember ladies, these tips are just guidelines, the most important thing to remember when choosing jewelry for yourself is that you must feel comfortable. Whichever type of styles you choose to wear, be confident and always make sure that your unique personality shines through.

Mystic Powers of Gemstones

Over the centuries, man has been using gemstones for a variety of purposes other than just being ornaments. In ancient times precious and semi-precious stones and gems were believed to have extraordinary enhancing and healing powers affecting mind, body and spirit and even influencing our fate and the course of our lives! For instance, gems were believed to be good luck charms when given to a beloved someone. Gemstones have also have been used for remedies in accordance with astrology for centuries. Many have doubted the magical properties believed to reside in each stone and make fun of the idea of gems having any influence on us. However, with man’s continuous search for a healthy body, inner peace, and well-being, some turning back to old beliefs and are finally rediscovering the hidden magical prowess of these beautiful but rare gemstones and have complete faith in this science.

I personally make no claims as to the validity of  powers that gemstones have, however I thought that you might be interested in reading about them. Here are just a few for you to read about:

Tips for Wearing Chandelier Earrings

Chandelier earrings are no longer just a trend, they have definitely become a style classic. When we’re talking chandelier earrings we are speaking of jewelry that can take you from daytime to night-time. They even have the capability to turn even the simplest outfit into a high styled and a very current look.
However, just because these pieces don’t ever go out of style doesn’t mean you just wear it any way you feel like, not every style is right for every woman. Even jewelry has its rules, in fact, by choosing the wrong style chandelier earring you can from fashionable to fashion victim in minutes.
So how to do you know what type of chandelier earring to choose? Here a few tips…

Choose Your Look
There are several kind of chandelier earrings so pick a pair depending on the look you’re trying to achieve, and the purpose or occasion you’re wearing it for. Junk jewelry made of cheaper metal is usually better for casual occasions and looks, and shorter lengths (no more than 2″ long) for daytime. They look especially fabulous if you’re going for the always in fashion Bohemian gypsy look. On the other hand, earrings made of gold, silver or any precious metal or even adorned with stones are better suited to a more formal occasion.

Lengths and Size
With chandelier earrings, the longer the better. WRONG!! Don’t get me wrong, long is definitely beautiful but these earrings should NEVER ever be longer than your neck or you could end up looking like you’re being dragged down by the weight of your earrings! If it’s touching the top of your shoulder when you’re standing, it’s going to be dangling into your cleavage by the time you sit down! Instead choose a style that leaves at least 1 inch of space between the bottom of the earring and the top of your shoulders.
  • measuring guide: Put your thumb ( nail side down) on your collarbone and extend your index finger up till it hits your jawline. Without moving your fingers take your hand away and measure the distance between your thumb and index finger. That should be about the right length for your chandelier earring – for most women it’s an earring between 2.5″ and 2.75″ long.

Type of Chandeliers for your Face
If you have a broad, round face, wear slimmer chandeliers and avoid ones with a broader base because they only seem to make your face look broader and rounder. If you have a thin face, balance it out with broader earrings in exactly the opposite way. And remember, if you have very short hair, don’t wear earrings that fall too far below your jaw line otherwise it just seems disproportionate.

Other Jewelry
As chandelier earrings in themselves create a pretty dressed up look, I would suggest not wearing any other jewelry with them. You could wear a matching bracelet or a ring at the most. However, definitely avoid an Over The Top neckpiece at all costs otherwise you look a little too much like a Christmas tree. Let’s just focus the attention on the beautiful earrings instead.

Most importantly, never forget to shop for a pair of chandelier earrings. It is a versatile jewelry item as it suits every complexion; every face cut and every outfit. Females wearing these fashionable earrings certainly catch holds the attention of the people. Every girl should own one pair, if not many pairs.

About Flutterbuy Design

My name is Krista, I began Flutterbuy Design in June of 2007.I had been making jewelry for myself, friends and family for about five years prior to starting my business. It started as a hobby, just something to do to relax and to create something unique for myself and others. As time went on I saw that I started to receive positive feedback on my work. It was at this time I began to get more and more requests for my pieces. As time went on both my need and interest to start the company began to grow. I began looking for more unique materials, and allowing my graphic design background assist in the jewelry designs.
My hobby turned into a business and then into a necessity, when I was diagnosed with Lupus in 2006. I was confined to a bed for a while and forced to give up working full time. Though I was able to work from home part-time, I needed something to keep me busy and that could also provide an income for my son and myself. Understand, with Lupus, you have your good days and bad days. On good days with lupus you may still have pain and fatigue, and on bad days all you want to do is be able to get out of bed. I had decided with the help of family and online support groups that I needed to find something else to focus on during this time. So Flutterbuy Design was born! On bad days I was able to go online to design a website and order supplies, sometimes I could even sketch out designs. On good days I was able to make the jewelry i had designed, take photos, and eventually fill orders. Now with my lupus a little more under control I’m able to design and make more jewelry then ever. I have been able to expanded my selection to awareness and wedding jewelry, along with custom pieces. Recently I have expanded to notecards, holiday cards, and custom invites.

Now I would like to share my designs with you. I think you’ll enjoy the variety you’ll find at flutterbuydesign.net. I would also love to hear any suggestions or requests
you have!
